Coins of England and Great Britain

('Coins of the UK')

Die Numbers

Between 1863 and 1880 silver and gold coins issued by the Royal Mint for circulation in the UK and its possessions had a die number inscribed on them. This followed similar limited experiments on halfpence and pennies in 1862 and 1863.

The following list of die numbers was based originally on an article in the COIN 1974 Year Book by Michael Mapleton. The publishers seem to have gone out of business, so I can only acknowledge them as the source of this information, which has been supplemented by information supplied directly to me by a considerable number of contributors, to whom I am most grateful.

The list is almost certainly not exhaustive. Information on numbers not already listed would be most gratefully received, but should not be construed as adding any value to the new find - no premium in value is applied to particular die numbers.

Numbers reported well away from the general run should be viewed with a degree of scepticism. I am sure some of those said to be in the 80's are probably in the 30's. The clarity of some die numbers leaves something to be desired, particularly on the sixpence.
The relatively small proportion of reported die numbers for the gold half sovereign and sovereign can be put down to the fact that the high cost of these coins limits the numbers that are collected by numismatists.

My particular thanks go to the enormous number of collectors who have reported unlisted die numbers over many years. It could well be possible that all the missing ones are out there somewhere!
